Urban Essence Needs Your Support
Urban Essence has been selected to represent Boston in a dance concert in Paris, France this summer.
Our group is a solid unit, although the funds are only sufficient for 6 dancers we are committed to raise the funds to bring all 12 dancers on the trip. We need to raise about $7000 dollars to be able to take the whole group. Every member is an essential part of the group and we do not want to have to leave anyone behind. We are planning to travel between June 18, 2006-June 28, 2006. We would appreciate your support. All donations are tax deductible, checks can be made out to the American Friends Service Committee and sent to Keith Harvey directed to Urban Essence 2161 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge MA 02140. Thank you for your support.

Urban Essence is an intensive dance performance program in Boston, MA. Dancers work as Youth Leaders in a youth collaborative to choreograph, teach and perform a range of Latin Folkloric and Modern dances. Through dance performance and music we guide the audience through our various folkloric dances which include; Bomba and Plena from Puerto Rico, Punta from Honduras, Rumba from Cuba, Columbian Cumbia and Folkloric Dominican Merengue. We move forward through time through Latin Jazz and the evolution of Cuban Cha Cha Cha, Salsa, Modern Merengue and Brazilian Samba. We learn about how Latin@s and African Americans have shared cultural and physical territory to combine in styles like Bugaloo and the evolution of that combo in Latin Hip Hop, Hip Hop and Reggaeton. We combine all of the above dances and history lessons to create unique performances. Youth Leaders attend weekly Youth Leadership Development trainings covering a large range of topics from music and dance history to racism and other issues posing challenges to Urban youth of color. With the combination of information and skills we create a statement through art and take every opportunity available to participate in positive social change. Our group chooses music that raises awareness about community issues and we often incorporate skits into the routines to further emphasize the message. We believe that art is a viable tool for creating positive social change and strive to demonstrate this in our own art work. We have used our organizing skills and connections in the community to mobilize youth for the December 1st Rosa Parks march and the March 18th anti-war march. We have consistently worked against racial profiling and police brutality by participating in the annual Set the Captives Free, Jericho political prisoners concert. We organized a concert to benefit the Somerville 5, five young men that were racially profiled and beaten by the police in Medford, MA In the past year and a half we have participated in over fifty community shows, we won first place for dance at the Boston Puerto Rican Festival 05. We have also been selected to represent Boston in a dance concert in Paris, France this summer. Our group is a solid unit, although the funds are only sufficient for 6 dancers we are committed to raise the funds to bring all 11 dancers on the trip. We need your help.
